Virtual Meetings

Virtually connecting is an important way to live and work these days. In the last year I have been working and training with Lisette Sutherland the author of ‘Working Together Anywhere’ to learn more about the skills you need to be an online facilitator.

Tips and Tricks for Virtual Meetings

Here are some useful things I have learned when you are starting out.

  1. Be patient. When connecting online we need to slow down pause and give space so we can all have time to speak.

  2. In any meeting or catch up have a fun connection activity (icebreaker) right at the start of the catch up. Ask a question people can respond to and make it fun, here is are some ideas. https://www.collaborationsuperpowers.com/44-icebreakers-for-virtual-teams/

  3. Have structure – this is especially important in a meeting. Have a basic agenda. Try to do meetings in 45 minute chunks and at the end go and have a break away from your screen.

  4. If you are the host make sure you are connecting everyone on the call and into the conversation. If you notice someone being quiet check in with them directly.

  5. Have fun. Most importantly as humans we are social and love to have fun so introduce themes and activities into your calls where you can enjoy yourselves. e.g wear a hat, draw on a ‘post it’ your favourite animal.
