#HomeTasking by Kathryn Stringer

In response to COVID-19 the ‘Live Up’ COVID COMMUNITY was set up to support our communities with practical wellbeing resources that can be used for these extraordinary circumstances of social distancing, community lockdown and quarantine. This article is from Kathryn Stringer and it is a ‘connection’ strategy because it gets the family working together to complete the challenges. You can also send extended family the links to see what you are getting up to as well as being fun to compete against friends and see how they interpret the tasks differently from you.

A challenge many of us now face is working from home in our cozy bubbles with our kids. I am lucky that part of my job as a teacher involves finding fun ways to connect with the students in my House Group, and if possible I try to get my kids involved with these tasks. Little Alex Horne of the TV show Taskmaster has provided us all with a doozy of a challenge that has managed to get my whole family working together, while providing a way to connect with my students and our extended family and friends.

Each week on the Taskmaster Youtube channel, Alex Horne is posting 3 creative challenges.

  • You have 30 hours to complete each challenge, and film your attempt.

  • Film clips should be no longer than 20 seconds, and should be uploaded to Youtube (we keep ours unlisted and just show them to our friends and family and my students.)

The adults in our house are big fans of Taskmaster, and in fact the kids love it too, even though the language is not always appropriate for a younger audience! Alex has promised all tasks for #HomeTasking will be G rated and appropriate for children though. They are a great way to have some fun competition with your friends, work together with your whanau, and to let your creativity and humour flow. When we have finished each task we send the youtube link to our friends and family, and post it in my House Group Google Classroom for my students to see. This was a great chance to learn for me, as I had never posted anything to Youtube before - and I discovered it is super easy.

Our Examples of ‘Taskmaster Challenge’ Task 1 and 2

Task 1 - throw a piece of paper spectacularly - we chose to throw it over the roof of the house as we had seen some others do (lol we used the magic of camera work to help.)

Our response to Task 2 - turn your bathroom into a place for a great night out. We decided to use a lego bathroom instead.
